LessLess Is Not The Only Retailer Opening It's Doors Despite Economic Conditions

Opening any sort of business is a risk especially in retail where the competition is stiff; couple that with a tough economy and you instinctively cringe because the outlook for success seems like an uphill battle. However, this is not always the case.

Manhattan has always been the home of independent retail and is considered somewhat of a tradition in certain neighborhoods like the Lower East side and Chelsea, and believe it or not, many smaller retailers appear to be thriving despite the current recession.

According to the New York Times, there are two upsides to the current economic climate with regard to retail and small business: 1) Rents are 20 to 40 percent lower than a year ago and 2) Landlords are more flexible, which is an advantage to any budding entrepreneur.

We took all of this into account when planning our business but we also had a clear vision, which is to ultimately become a useful brand, or entity in the lives of those living, breathing and working in the surrounding community. We conduct our business on the ethos that quality products + fantastic prices + great customer service = retail success.

Timing and persistence are surely additional elements significant to a thriving business and we like to believe we have all of these on our side. If you don’t believe us, just take a listen to what our customers have to say:

Fashion & Beauty Tip on a Budget: Red Play

It’s a brand new year and it’s time to make a splash in every aspect of your life, from your relationships, to your health and career and what better way to reflect this new zest than through your wardrobe!?

Ignore what naturally comes to mind when you think of winter in New York, because it is going to sizzling hot and this has nothing to do with global warming. Red, all shades of red are very in this season and this is great news since red is a strong power color perfect boosting confidence while trying to seize your slice of the pie in 2010!

“But wonderful folks at LessLess, I really don’t have the budget to add any of these cool new reds to my closet.”

Nonsense, there are so many innovative and inexpensive ways to add just a touch of red to your wardrobe without dipping in those savings. The key: accessories, accessories, accessories.

Scarves: They are so popular right now, and they can be purchased just about anywhere. If you are walking on the street to the little shops in Port Authority, you are bound to find one – very trendy at that!

Red rings: Nothing like a beautifully handcrafted piece of jewelry. My favorites: Pippin located not to far from LessLess and Union Square.

Sunglasses: Pick up a pair of red sunglasses from Steve Madden for less than $35 bucks.

Oh! How could I almost forget to beg you to pick up a stellar red belt to liven up the camel colored pants or tunic from last year or add it to a lighter shade of red to a pair of light gray slacks.

Now the Shoes: Red or pink shoes make a statement with just about any ensemble. Rather than go with the black dress and the red shoes, couple the red with some blues or browns!

Play with these Shades:

American Beauty: This true red is neither harsh nor over-the-top and is designed to suit all skin tones.

R
apture Rose: This vibrant color signifies all that is new and fresh. This nurturing and feminine tone, is toned down from last season's fuschia a little with soft pink.

Burnt Sienna: More a pinkish, earthy orange, reminiscent of Mediterranean terracotta roof tiles. Warm and comforting, probably the most-fall like of all the Panetone shades.

Fashion Icons Shifting To Virtual Fashion Shows?

I love talking about social media is changing the shape of the world, with how we meet new people and potentially a new mate, but primarily to the way business is being conducted. More and more brands are shifting their advertising from traditional outlets to the World Wide Web. Since Less Less is in the business of retail I am constantly researching ways to position our brand online so we can continue to be competitive. In doing this research I came across an interesting discussion that I just had to share with you. Some of the major fashion brands that everyone, especially retailers, looks to for the latest trends and fads are considering moving their big-budgeted fashion shows online in order to cut down on costs.

According to an article published in Retail Wire the cost savings in producing a virtual fashion show as opposed to the lavish traditional shows is monumental. Here is a cool tidbit to put it all into perspective: David Lauren, Marketing Chief at Ralph Lauren stated the iconic brand spends nearly $1.5 million to attract approximately 700 retail buyers and related press. If they were to take that concept online, the production cost drops to $50,000 with an estimation of 40 million page views!!! That is simply incredible, but the question remains whether this shift from traditional fashion shows will prove to be beneficial to a brand over the long term.

I embrace change and I do believe this could be a great marketing tool, however I caution designers out there to take baby steps. Begin with a smaller collection or one of your “baby” lines. On a final note, remember that social media should always be incorporated into a grander offline marketing mix. Studies have shown that completely replying on the web or online marketing has not always been advantageous. Those are my two cents, what do you think?

Great Gifts to Give - Get Cozy This Winter

The temperature has dropped and winter is officially here. Rather than focus on the negative, let's close our eyes and think about all of the wonderful things that come with winter. Fireplaces. Hot chocolate with extra whip cream.. yummy. Snowball fights and mistletoe. The fun does not stop there. At Less Less we have an assortment of items to make your winter not only bearable, but deliciously enjoyable.

One of my favorite past times in the winter is sleeping in on the weekends especially when the apartment is toasty from the heater. The first step to creating your perfect winter womb are comfortable pajamas. At Less Less we have pajamas for women and men for under ten dollars. Designed for comfort, we carry an assortment of styles and colors, that make the perfect gift for almost everyone. If you pick up a pair of flannels you get two awesome benefits: 1) you give a gift of comfort and 2) you help give someone a restful nights sleep - night clothes definitely impact how well a person sleeps. We have them at Less Less for $6.99.

Another way to get cozy this winter is to purchase a pair of warm slippers. Get a pair of wacky ones that have the face of your favorite animal. (I have a bumble bee pair that I wear daily.) Take a look these fun slippers that just arrived in the store. Not only are they cute and add to the creation of your winter womb, they have other benefits too, like warmth (duh!) and they will help keep your feet moisturized and less chapped. If you hate mopping and sweeping, changing into slippers when you arrive home prevents the accumulation of dirt from your outdoor shoes. Check out these other benefits here: Utomopink. We have a slew of cute and cozy slippers for you to enjoy at the store for just $6.99.

Now we can't forget sheets, blankets and other cover-ups. To get you started in that department, we have Cute Cuddle Blankets in stock for $9.99. They are super cozy and warm, and they even come with pockets so you can stuff the remote or even those candy bars you try not to eat.

As we get deeper into the season we will surely provide you with some other nifty products to create your winter sanctuary.
